Brazil to invest $444 million in AI infrastructure with US and China

The investment comes as Brazil deepens economic ties with China, its largest trading partner, while the US remains its biggest source of foreign direct investment.

Brazil is committing about 2.3 billion reais ($444.2 million) to artificial intelligence infrastructure through projects involving both Chinese and US technology companies.

A 1.3 billion-real ($251 million) project in Rio de Janeiro will be developed with Huawei and iFlytek and is intended to support large language models for general and industry-specific applications.

Another 1 billion reais ($193.1 million) will fund a tender for a supercomputer in Rio Grande do Norte that Brazil expects to place among the world’s 10 most powerful AI machines. The facility was selected partly for its energy potential, and Nvidia is expected to supply the system, according to Reuters and comments from Brazil’s science and technology minister.

The projects are being funded through the National Fund for Scientific and Technological Development and will be disbursed in phases. President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva’s government said the strategy is to strengthen Brazil’s data sovereignty while ensuring the country does not become dependent on one company, technology or nation.

The supercomputer is expected to be operational by the end of 2027, while the Huawei and iFlytek cooperation is scheduled to begin in July 2027.
