Brentford made a convincing statement in the west London derby, shutting out Chelsea 2-0 at the Gtech Community Stadium in Round 5 of the 2026-27 Premier League season.
Jaidon Anthony broke the deadlock with a header in the 61st minute. Igor Thiago added insurance in the 83rd, finishing off a rapid counter-attack.
Possession without purpose
Chelsea dominated the ball for large stretches of the match but struggled to do anything meaningful with it. Brentford were happy to sit deeper, soak up pressure, and wait for moments to strike. Those moments came twice, and both times the Bees were clinical.
Through five matches, Alonso’s squad has posted two wins, two draws, and now one loss. Brentford registered a higher shot volume and won more corners than their visitors.
Andrews building something real
Keith Andrews has only been in the Brentford dugout for a short time, but this result extended the club’s unbeaten start to five league matches, with one win and three draws preceding the Chelsea victory.
Brentford were missing Josh Dasilva and Nathan Collins. Andrews still found a way to organize his squad into a disciplined, dangerous outfit.
Chelsea’s missing pieces and mounting questions
Alonso was also dealing with absences. Reece James was unavailable. João Pedro was also missing from the squad.
Five games into the season, Chelsea sit on eight points. The congested schedule ahead, with cup competitions stacking up alongside league fixtures, will test Alonso’s squad depth.
Brentford now sit in a healthy position in the early table, their five-match unbeaten run providing a foundation to build on as the autumn fixture pile arrives.
