Cardano shifts core development to independent ecosystem teams

Cardano shifts core development to independent ecosystem teams

Cardano is transferring core infrastructure development to independent teams, with Haskell, Rust and Go node implementations planned by 2027.

Input Output has announced the next stage of Cardano’s decentralization, transferring responsibility for several core infrastructure components to specialist development teams.

The transition covers the Cardano Haskell node, Plutus, Daedalus, Hydra and developer relations. IO said the move extends decentralization beyond Cardano’s protocol and governance by distributing responsibility for how the network is built and maintained.

Specialist partners including Se7en Labs and Teragone will assume responsibility for specific components. Named partners, public repositories and governance oversight from Intersect are intended to make the transition transparent and accountable.

Cardano founder Charles Hoskinson said the process is expected to conclude in 2027, with independent firms maintaining at least three Cardano implementations written in Haskell, Rust and Go.

The implementations will be supported by formal specifications overseen by organizations including Intersect and Pragma. Development will remain subject to community review and voting.

“The last stage of the Voltaire era is full decentralization of node and reference blueprint development,” Hoskinson said.

He added that IO Labs is spinning out development of the Haskell node to community control as part of the transition.

The broader development structure is intended to reduce Cardano’s reliance on a single organization and strengthen the case for community funded infrastructure through the Cardano treasury.

As external teams assume responsibility for engineering and delivery, IO plans to focus more heavily on research and venture creation through IO Labs and IO Ventures.

The decentralization campaign launched on July 17, 2026, with a dedicated website and short film. Additional transition milestones covering the Haskell node, Plutus, Hydra and developer relations are expected between August and December 2026.

IO Labs and IO Ventures are expected to begin operating under the new structure from January 2027 as partner teams take control of their respective Cardano components.
