Manchester United's Turkish goalkeeper heads to La Liga in search of the playing time that has eluded him at Old Trafford
Altay Bayindir has joined Celta Vigo on a season-long loan for the 2026/27 campaign, ending a frustrating spell at Manchester United where he managed just 17 appearances across all competitions since his arrival in September 2023.
The deal, finalized around August 5, 2026, includes an option for Celta to make the move permanent for approximately £3.5 million, or around €4 million. Celta will cover Bayindir’s full salary during the loan period, along with performance-related bonuses. Manchester United have retained a sell-on clause if Celta eventually decides to buy.
A career stuck in neutral at United
Bayindir arrived at Manchester United in September 2023 for £4.3 million. At 28, he is a Turkish international who made 116 appearances for Fenerbahçe between 2019 and 2023 before earning his move to England. He began his professional career at Ankaragücü before joining Fenerbahçe, where he became the club’s number one goalkeeper.
What this means going forward
The buy option price point tells an interesting story about Bayindir’s market value trajectory. United paid £4.3 million for him in 2023, and now Celta can potentially acquire him for £3.5 million, roughly an £800K depreciation. The sell-on clause United retained means that if Bayindir thrives at Celta and eventually moves to a bigger club for a significantly higher fee, United would receive a percentage of that deal. For a player who cost £4.3 million and contributed 17 appearances, United’s transfer team is clearly trying to extract every last drop of value from what has been, by any honest assessment, a signing that simply didn’t work out as planned.
