Cloudflare introduces Monetization Gateway for AI agent micropayments
The web infrastructure giant is building a pay-per-request tollbooth for the AI-driven internet, powered by Coinbase's x402 protocol and its own NET Dollar stablecoin.
Cloudflare has unveiled its new Monetization Gateway, a platform that enables customers to charge for web pages, APIs, datasets, and AI tools using usage-based pricing settled in stablecoins, according to a Wednesday blog post.
Powered by the open x402 protocol, the service is designed to help businesses monetize digital resources as AI agents become increasingly responsible for consuming online services.
The gateway allows customers to create payment policies while Cloudflare manages payment verification, enforcement, and settlement at the network edge, reducing infrastructure complexity and protecting origin servers.
Stablecoin settlement provides near-instant, low-cost transactions, making sub-cent micropayments practical for machine-to-machine commerce, according to the company.
Cloudflare believes that the traditional internet economy built around advertising and subscriptions is giving way to an agent-first model where AI systems pay directly for the resources they consume.
The company says its platform lays the foundation for this transition by allowing every request to function as both a payment and an authenticated transaction.
