Cypherpunk Technologies launches Zcash mining operation with a privacy mandate

The publicly traded firm acquired a mining fleet in a $33.33 million equity deal tied to Winklevoss-affiliated entities

Cypherpunk Technologies is no longer content just holding Zcash. Now it wants to make it too.

On August 18, 2026, the publicly traded privacy technology firm launched a Zcash mining operation that it claims is the largest of its kind in the world. It got there through a $33.33 million equity-based acquisition from Winklevoss-affiliated entities. That pairs a sizable ZEC treasury with the machinery to produce more of it.

The company frames the move as part of a broader mission. In its own words:

Cypherpunk invests in privacy technologies to support the cypherpunk ethos and American values.

The details: hashrate, holdings and a warrant

After the launch, the mining fleet reportedly delivered approximately 4.2 GSol/s. GSol/s stands for billions of solutions per second, the unit Zcash uses to measure computing power on its network.

That figure represented about 18% of total Zcash network hashrate. Cypherpunk expects to push its share to around 20% by late October 2026.

The mining arm sits alongside an already substantial treasury. Cypherpunk currently holds 323,394 ZEC, which works out to roughly 1.92% of circulating supply.

The stated goal is bigger. The company wants to own 5% of ZEC supply in total, and mining rewards are meant to help close that gap.

Those rewards also serve a second purpose. Cypherpunk says the mined Zcash will help fund further investment in privacy-preserving technologies.

How the deal was structured

The acquisition did not involve a big cash payment. Instead, the deal included a pre-funded warrant for approximately 43.3 million shares of CYPH, the company’s stock ticker.

A pre-funded warrant is essentially a claim on shares that the holder can convert later. The key benefit here is that Cypherpunk could expand its operations without a cash outlay.

The company also added a new executive. Kevin Zhang, an industry veteran, joined as Head of Mining to lead the initiative after the deal closed.

Background: a treasury company with a philosophy

Cypherpunk’s name is not subtle. The cypherpunk philosophy, as the company describes its alignment, centers on self-sovereignty and resistance to surveillance.

Zcash is a natural fit for that worldview. It is a cryptocurrency designed with privacy features, which is precisely the category of technology Cypherpunk says it exists to support.

Until now, the company’s exposure came mainly from accumulating ZEC on its balance sheet. With the mining fleet, it moves from buyer to producer.

What this means for Zcash and CYPH holders

For CYPH investors, the company now has two ways to grow its ZEC position: buying on the open market and earning block rewards directly.

The 20% hashrate target by late October 2026 is an expectation, not a done deal. The 5% supply goal is the larger milestone. Going from roughly 1.92% to 5% means more than doubling the current position, so mining alone may take time to get there.

On the other side sits concentration. A single public company controlling around 18% of hashrate, and aiming for around 20%, is a meaningful share of a network whose appeal rests partly on not depending on any one party.

The company’s next checkpoints are concrete. Watch for the hashrate share in late October 2026, the pace of ZEC accumulation toward 5%, and how mining rewards get deployed into privacy technology investments.
