Dragonfly Capital moves $2M in APEX tokens to Bybit, raising questions about VC selling pressure

The venture capital firm transferred its freshly unlocked tokens to an exchange just two weeks after receiving them, a move that rarely screams 'long-term conviction'

Dragonfly Capital, one of crypto’s most prominent venture firms, transferred roughly $2 million worth of APEX tokens to the Bybit exchange on July 29. The move was flagged by on-chain analytics platform Arkham and immediately caught the attention of market watchers looking for signs of institutional selling.

Those APEX tokens had only been unlocked about two weeks before the transfer.

What the on-chain data shows

At the time of the transfer, APEX was Dragonfly’s third-largest holding, sitting behind LIT and BGB in their publicly tracked wallet portfolio.

Dragonfly was among the earliest institutional backers of ApeX Protocol, participating in the project’s first funding round alongside Tiger Global and Jump Trading. The firm lists ApeX Protocol as a portfolio company to this day.

The transfer destination matters too. Bybit isn’t just any exchange for ApeX Protocol. The project’s initial token distribution happened through Bybit Launchpad 2.0 back in April 2022, making Bybit the most natural venue for any APEX liquidity event.

So far, the token hasn’t shown a dramatic price reaction to the transfer. Arkham categorized the move as either a sale or a liquidity maneuver, leaving some ambiguity in the interpretation.

The VC token unlock playbook

Dragonfly recently closed a $650 million fund. Two weeks between an unlock and an exchange transfer is relatively fast. Moving them to a centralized exchange within 14 days suggests either a desire for quick liquidity or confidence that the current market conditions offer an acceptable exit price.

ApeX Protocol in context

ApeX Protocol is a non-custodial decentralized exchange focused on perpetual derivatives trading. It launched its mainnet on Arbitrum on February 28, 2022.

APEX has a maximum supply of 1 billion tokens, serving as a governance token, staking mechanism, and incentivization tool. The project attracted institutional attention during its fundraising phase, with Dragonfly, Tiger Global, and Jump Trading all participating early.
