Estevao header earns Chelsea draw against Spurs as big-money transfers headline Sydney friendly
A £100 million Tonali and a €65 million Estevao share the spotlight in a 1-1 pre-season draw at Accor Stadium
Pre-season friendlies are usually forgettable. This one had a little more riding on it.
Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur played out a 1-1 draw at Accor Stadium in Sydney on August 1, 2026, in a match that doubled as a showcase for two of the summer’s most expensive acquisitions. Spurs midfielder Sandro Tonali opened the scoring in the first half, only for Chelsea winger Estevão Willian to cancel it out with a well-timed header in the second.
The transfers behind the headlines
Tonali arrived at Spurs from Newcastle United on July 6, 2026, in a deal worth £100 million, making it a club-record signing for Tottenham.
Estevão’s route to Chelsea was slightly longer. The Brazilian winger, born in 2007, completed his move from Palmeiras in the summer of 2025 for an initial fee of around €34 million. With add-ons, the total package could reach approximately €65 million.
Chelsea’s lineup in Sydney also featured Cole Palmer and João Pedro, signaling that the club intends to treat this pre-season as genuine preparation rather than a commercial tourism exercise.
Football’s growing crypto footprint
Neither Chelsea nor Spurs announced any crypto-specific partnership tied to these signings. But as clubs spend at levels that require creative revenue diversification, partnerships with digital asset platforms become more attractive. Fan tokens, which give holders access to club votes, exclusive content, and engagement mechanics, have tracked closely with transfer market sentiment in the past.
Fan tokens are speculative instruments with thin liquidity and high sensitivity to on-pitch results. A club that spends £100 million on a midfielder and then underperforms in the Premier League is not a recipe for token price appreciation.
