Google tests Gemini AI calling feature that dials customer service for you

The 'Call for me' tool lets Gemini autonomously navigate phone menus and hold times on behalf of Pixel 11 users.

Google is building an AI feature that will call customer service so you don’t have to. Called “Call for me” and codenamed “Hedwig,” the tool uses Google’s Gemini AI to autonomously dial support lines, navigate automated phone menus, and sit on hold, all while you do literally anything else with your time.

The feature surfaced through an APK teardown of the Phone by Google beta app (version 239.0.980790129) around September 21, 2026. It appears to be in early-stage development and aimed primarily at Pixel devices, with availability tied to Google’s paid AI Pro subscription tier.

What the feature actually does

“Call for me” goes well beyond Google’s existing call management tools like Hold for Me, Call Screen, and Direct My Call. Those features handle individual slices of the phone call experience. This new tool handles the whole thing.

Gemini places the call on the user’s behalf, works through interactive voice response (IVR) systems, and manages hold times autonomously. Users can monitor what’s happening through live audio streaming or read along via real-time transcripts.

For now, the tool appears to require a Google AI Pro subscription to access its full capabilities. New Pixel 11 buyers get a complimentary 6-month trial of the service.

The Pixel 11 connection

The timing of this discovery aligns neatly with Google’s latest hardware cycle. The Pixel 11 series launched on August 12, 2026, featuring what Google branded as “Gemini Intelligence,” a suite of on-device AI capabilities powered by the new Tensor G6 chip.

Google has been steadily layering AI features into its Pixel lineup for years. Call Screen, which debuted back in 2018, was one of the first mainstream demonstrations of real-time AI on a smartphone. Hold for Me followed, and Direct My Call helped users navigate phone trees more quickly. “Call for me” is the logical endpoint of that trajectory: just let the AI handle the entire interaction.

The feature hasn’t been officially announced by Google, and there’s no confirmed public release timeline. But the fact that it’s showing up in beta app code suggests it’s past the conceptual stage and moving toward a real product.
