Google launches Googlebooks, new Android-based laptops arriving fall 2026

Google is officially shipping Googlebooks, its new line of Android-based laptops that effectively replace Chromebooks with something far more ambitious. The devices, built by five major hardware partners, represent Google’s most aggressive push into the premium laptop market to date.

After a barebones reveal back in May, the full picture is now clear: Googlebooks run on an Android-based operating system codenamed Aluminium OS, integrate deeply with Android smartphones, and lean heavily on Google’s Gemini AI throughout the experience. Pre-orders opened on September 21, and the first models land on October 4.

What’s actually inside a Googlebook

The launch lineup includes five models from Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP, and Lenovo. All are targeting the premium end of the spectrum, positioning Googlebooks squarely against Apple’s MacBook lineup and the growing wave of Windows AI laptops.

The hardware introduces a few distinctive design choices. Most notable is the “Glowbar,” a light indicator built into the chassis that serves as a visual notification layer.

On the software side, Aluminium OS blends the security and management strengths that made Chromebooks popular in enterprise and education with the full native Android app ecosystem.

AI as the operating principle

Gemini Intelligence is woven throughout the Googlebook experience. The standout feature is “Magic Pointer,” a cursor tool that offers contextual suggestions based on what you’re hovering over.

Googlebooks also support generative widgets, which are on-device, AI-created interface elements that adapt to your usage patterns.

The strategic calculus

Chromebooks carved out a meaningful niche, particularly in education and budget-conscious segments, but they never cracked the premium market in a serious way. Googlebooks are designed to fix that.

The initial focus on high-end hardware is deliberate. Google has already confirmed plans to introduce lower-cost Googlebook models in the future, which would let it cover the full price spectrum and potentially convert existing Chromebook users upward.

Aluminium OS also promises faster feature updates than traditional laptop operating systems, borrowing from the Android phone update cadence.
