Jordan’s national football team has officially separated from head coach Jamal Sellami following a World Cup campaign that ended with zero points in the group stage. The Moroccan-born coach made history by steering Jordan to their first-ever FIFA World Cup berth but couldn’t replicate that magic on the biggest stage.

The departure reportedly came shortly after Jordan’s 2-1 loss to Algeria on June 22, 2026, capping a group stage in which the team lost all three matches and collected zero points in Group J.

From historic highs to a swift exit

Appointed in June 2024, Sellami accomplished what no coach before him had managed, guiding Jordan through AFC qualifying as runners-up in Group B to reach the 2026 World Cup.

Jordan faced Austria, Algeria, and Argentina in Group J. A 3-1 loss to Austria opened the campaign, followed by a 2-1 defeat to Algeria, and then a match against Argentina that completed the clean sweep of losses. Jordan scored three goals across three games but couldn’t find a single point, finishing dead last in the group.

The coaching change appears to have been framed more as Sellami’s personal decision rather than a straightforward firing. Sellami had invested deeply in the Jordanian project, even receiving Jordanian citizenship in December 2025 in recognition of his contributions to the national team. As of early July 2026, updates on various platforms still reflected Sellami as the head coach, suggesting the news was freshly emerging and had not been fully confirmed by the Jordan Football Association.
