Olympique Lyonnais traveled to Prague’s epet ARENA on August 4 with Champions League ambitions and left with a 2-1 defeat that puts their European campaign on life support. Sparta Prague erased an early deficit with two second-half goals, turning what looked like a comfortable Lyon progression into a qualifying-round crisis.
The match also carried a quieter storyline: Ernest Nuamah, the 22-year-old Ghanaian forward, stepped onto the pitch as a late substitute for his first competitive minutes in over a year. He didn’t find the scoresheet, but the fact that he was out there at all after a severe knee injury was its own kind of result.
A tale of two halves in Prague
Lyon controlled much of the first half without creating the kind of clear-cut chances that would suggest dominance. Their reward came right before the break, when Sparta defender Matěj Suchomel turned the ball into his own net in the 45th minute.
Sparta Prague came out transformed after the interval. Matěj Ryneš leveled things in the 63rd minute, and just six minutes later, John Mercado completed the turnaround to make it 2-1.
Nuamah’s quiet comeback
For Ernest Nuamah, the scoreline mattered less than the simple act of being available. The forward, who joined Lyon in 2024 from FC Nordsjælland, had been sidelined for approximately 13 months with a knee injury that kept him out of competitive football for an entire season. His introduction as a substitute around the 75th minute was his first taste of match action since the injury.

Born on November 1, 2003, Nuamah’s cameo lasted only until the 77th minute — hardly enough to influence the outcome of a match that had already slipped away from Lyon.
Lyon’s broader problems
Lyon now need to overturn a one-goal deficit at home in the second leg just to stay alive in the third qualifying round. Win that, and they still face another round before reaching the group stage.
Sparta Prague demonstrated exactly the kind of resilience that makes Czech clubs dangerous in qualifying rounds, capitalizing on Lyon’s vulnerability across two goals in six minutes. Lyon entered the Champions League qualifying rounds against a backdrop of domestic struggles, and the loss in Prague only compounds the pressure on the club.
