About Astar
Astar Network is a Polkadot parachain and multi-chain smart contract platform built on Substrate, designed as a hub for deploying and interacting with cross-chain smart contracts. Sota Watanabe founded the project in 2019 under the name Plasm Network. It rebranded to Astar Network in 2022. The ASTR token and Astar parachain launched with an initial total supply of 7 billion ASTR around the network's early 2022 mainnet and Polkadot parachain launch. Astar is a Substrate-based parachain secured by Polkadot's Nominated Proof-of-Stake consensus via the relay chain. Its core design includes a dApp staking mechanism that lets users stake ASTR to support specific applications and earn rewards. The native token, ASTR, is used for transaction fees, dApp staking, and governance, including proposing and voting on protocol policies. The supply model began with inflationary issuance on top of the initial 7 billion ASTR. Under Tokenomics 3.0, the total supply is designed to asymptotically converge toward a fixed maximum of approximately 10 billion ASTR through an emission decay function that reduces per-block minting over time. Astar Network is a programmable smart contract and dApp platform within the Polkadot ecosystem that allows developers to build interoperable multi-chain applications.
