About Celo
Celo is a blockchain platform for decentralized applications and crypto payments, focused on making financial transfers accessible through smartphones. Rene Reinsberg, Marek Olszewski, and Sep Kamvar co-founded the project in 2017. The Celo mainnet launched on April 22, 2020, and the CELO token became available for trading around the same time. Celo uses a proof-of-stake consensus mechanism with a Byzantine Fault Tolerant validator set, implemented through a modified go-ethereum client that replaces proof-of-work with BFT proof-of-stake. Validators are elected and stake CELO to participate in block production and network security. The native token, CELO, is used to pay transaction fees, stake as a validator or within validator groups, and vote on on-chain governance proposals through locked CELO. Celo supports stablecoin-based transactions, such as cUSD, and uses phone-number-based addressing to simplify everyday payments. CELO has a fixed total supply of approximately one billion tokens, with staking rewards distributed within that framework.
