About Pi Network
Pi Network is a mobile-first blockchain project that lets ordinary users mine and transact cryptocurrency through a smartphone app using a social trust model. It was founded in 2019 by a group of Stanford-affiliated PhDs, with the public launch reported on March 14, 2019. The mainnet launched in an enclosed form on December 28, 2021 and opened to external connectivity and exchange access on February 20, 2025. The network uses Federated Byzantine Agreement, adapted from the Stellar Consensus Protocol, rather than proof-of-work or proof-of-stake. The native token is Pi (ticker PI), used for on-chain transactions and fees, payments, and as the unit of account for apps and services within the Pi ecosystem. Pi has a hard-capped maximum supply of 100 billion PI, with circulating supply in early 2026 reported at roughly 11.1 billion PI. The remaining supply unlocks gradually through mining rewards, team and foundation vesting, and user migration. The project's long-term utility depends on whether its mobile-centered payment and application ecosystem actually grows.
