About Rocket Pool
Rocket Pool is a decentralized Ethereum liquid staking protocol that lets users stake ETH and receive a liquid staking derivative token in return. It also provides infrastructure for node operators running Ethereum validators. David Rugendyke began work on the project in December 2016, after renewed interest in Ethereum staking spurred by the publication of the 2016 Mauve Paper. The protocol conducted a token offering in 2017, with the full staking protocol developed and refined over the following years. Rocket Pool operates on top of Ethereum rather than running its own consensus mechanism. Its design relies on a network of decentralized node operators, RPL-backed collateral requirements, and DAO-based governance. The native token, RPL, must be staked by node operators as collateral and is also used for protocol governance and earning protocol rewards. RPL's supply is not firmly capped; older references cited an initial supply of around 18 million tokens, but more recent circulating supply figures are closer to 22.8 million. Rocket Pool is one of the larger decentralized alternatives to centralized Ethereum staking services, allowing users to participate in Ethereum validation without running their own validator node.
