About Somnia
Somnia is an EVM-compatible Layer 1 blockchain built for high-throughput, real-time on-chain applications, including games, social platforms, AI and agentic applications, and other decentralized apps. The project was developed by Improbable, a UK-based metaverse technology company, in collaboration with the Somnia Foundation. The mainnet and its native token launched on 2 September 2025 after an extensive testnet phase. Somnia uses a delegated proof-of-stake consensus mechanism, where validators and delegators stake SOMI to secure the network and process transactions. SOMI is used for gas and transaction fees, validator and delegated staking, and governance over network upgrades and policies. The token has a fixed total supply capped at 1,000,000,000, with approximately 16 percent in circulation as of mid-2026. The remaining supply is subject to long-term vesting schedules. A deflationary mechanism burns a portion of transaction fees paid in SOMI, reducing effective circulating supply over time. Somnia provides high-speed settlement and execution infrastructure intended to support real-time, fully on-chain applications.
