About Sonic
Sonic is a high-performance EVM-compatible Layer-1 blockchain built for fast finality and high throughput, targeting DeFi applications and general-purpose smart contracts. It was developed by Sonic Labs, formerly the Fantom Foundation, as a direct successor and rebrand of the Fantom Opera network. The Sonic mainnet launched in late 2024, and the native S token formally replaced the legacy FTM token at a 1:1 migration ratio in January 2025. Sonic uses an optimized, DAG-based asynchronous Byzantine fault tolerant consensus mechanism called Sonic consensus, derived from Fantom's Lachesis aBFT design. This enables sub-second finality on a directed acyclic graph structure. The native token, S, is used to pay transaction fees, stake to secure the network, run validator nodes, and participate in on-chain governance. Sonic launched with an initial total supply of approximately 3.175 billion S tokens, matching the prior FTM supply. It follows an inflationary model with no fixed maximum supply, alongside burning mechanisms. Total supply stood at roughly 3.88 billion S and circulating supply at around 3.28 billion S as of mid-2026. Sonic is the primary settlement and execution layer for the ecosystem previously built on Fantom, with S as its gas, staking, and governance token.
