About The Sandbox
The Sandbox is a blockchain-based virtual gaming and metaverse platform built on Ethereum. Users create, own, and monetize in-game assets such as LAND parcels and ASSETS using NFTs, with governance handled through a decentralized autonomous organization. Pixowl, the company behind the project, was founded in 2011 by Arthur Madrid, Sébastien Borget, and Adrien Duermaël. A non-blockchain version of the game launched on mobile and PC in 2012. The project pivoted to blockchain around 2018 to 2019, and the SAND token launched as an ERC-20 token via Binance Launchpad in August 2020. The Sandbox runs on the Ethereum network, which uses proof-of-stake consensus to secure transactions. SAND is staked for rewards rather than mined. SAND is the platform's primary currency. It is used to purchase virtual land and assets, pay creation and publishing fees, stake for rewards and content access, and vote on governance proposals through the platform DAO. SAND has a fixed maximum supply of 3,000,000,000 tokens. These are allocated across the team, advisors, foundation reserves, ecosystem incentives, and liquidity pools, with vesting schedules governing how tokens enter circulation. The platform combines user-generated content, NFT ownership, and token-based governance to run a player-driven virtual economy.
