Elon Musk claims SoftBank is defaulting on turbine orders, shares slide 10.83%

A single post on X tied SoftBank's energy arm to unpaid turbine orders as Stargate financing faces fresh scrutiny

Elon Musk has accused SoftBank of defaulting on its turbine orders. Tokyo traders did not wait for a second source.

SoftBank Group shares fell 10.83% during Tokyo trading after the November 6, 2026 post on X. The claim lands at an awkward moment for the Stargate AI project, the joint venture SoftBank shares with OpenAI and Oracle.

“SoftBank is defaulting on their turbine orders.”

That is the entire allegation. No details of any default have been confirmed.

What Musk is pointing at

The turbines in question were reportedly gas turbines ordered by SB Energy, SoftBank’s US energy subsidiary. These are the heavy machines that turn natural gas into electricity at industrial scale.

SB Energy’s turbine orders are tied to an upcoming natural-gas facility planned for Ohio, sized at roughly 9.2 GW.

Timing makes these orders especially sensitive. Lead times for turbine deliveries can stretch up to seven years in today’s supply-constrained market.

A rough week for Stargate

Musk’s post did not arrive in a vacuum. It came alongside the reported auction of approximately $500 million in data-center loans, a significant portion of which is associated with Stargate.

Oracle has also issued a force majeure notice concerning one of the Stargate project sites. Force majeure is the contractual clause that excuses a party from obligations because of events outside its control.

The share drop also played out amid a broader selloff in the AI infrastructure sector.

Musk and SoftBank: not a new feud

Stargate launched in January 2025 with a headline value of approximately $500 billion.

Musk has questioned SoftBank’s ability to fund its share of the project since the announcement. He raised doubts about the financing from the very start.

His skepticism has now moved from the general to the specific. Earlier criticism asked whether the money existed. This latest claim alleges a concrete failure to pay for equipment.

It is worth remembering who is talking. Musk runs his own AI company and has a long public rivalry with OpenAI, so his commentary on Stargate is rarely neutral.

What this means for SoftBank, Oracle, and OpenAI

For SoftBank shareholders, the 10.83% move shows how little patience the market has left for AI financing uncertainty. A single unverified sentence was enough to knock a double-digit chunk off the stock in one session.

If turbines for the Ohio facility were to slip, the knock-on effects would be measured in years, not quarters. Given those seven-year lead times, a lost slot is not easily replaced by placing a new order next month.

For now, the facts on the table are a post, a share drop, a reported loan auction, and a force majeure notice.
