Bundesbank chief Nagel advances ECB presidency bid as crypto policy hangs in the balance
The man who called Bitcoin a 'digital tulip' is positioning himself to run Europe's most powerful central bank, and crypto markets should pay attention.
Joachim Nagel, the president of Germany’s Bundesbank, is actively advancing his campaign to become the next head of the European Central Bank. His latest move: high-profile talks in Berlin that underscore just how serious this succession race has become.
The succession race takes shape
Christine Lagarde’s term as ECB president isn’t technically up until October 2027. But reports emerging since February 2026 have suggested she could step down early, setting off a competitive scramble among Europe’s top central bankers.
Nagel isn’t the only name in the mix. Former Dutch central bank head Klaas Knot and former Bank of Spain governor Pablo Hernández de Cos are also considered serious contenders. Surveys conducted by OMFIF, a central banking think tank, in early to mid-2026 consistently placed Nagel among the top two or three candidates, citing his leadership abilities and capital markets knowledge.
His attendance at key German cabinet meetings on July 6, 2026 in Berlin wasn’t just routine Bundesbank business. It was a signal. Showing up at the intersection of fiscal and monetary policy discussions, in the capital of Europe’s largest economy, is the kind of quiet positioning that matters in these races.
In a November 2025 interview with Spiegel, Nagel played coy but left the door wide open. He said that “in principle, every central banker on the ECB Governing Council probably has the right skills to take over the top job.”
Why crypto should care about this appointment
Nagel has compared Bitcoin to tulip mania, calling it a “digital tulip.” At the same time, Nagel has been one of the loudest voices pushing for the digital euro. He’s framed it as essential for European strategic autonomy, arguing that without a state-backed digital payment system, Europe risks ceding financial infrastructure to foreign tech companies and private crypto networks.
The policy pivot that markets are watching
Since taking over the Bundesbank in January 2022, Nagel has built a reputation for crisis management and pragmatic monetary policy. His approach to joint EU debt has been described as more pragmatic than the hardline positions associated with previous Bundesbank leadership.
Nagel’s competitors offer meaningfully different approaches. Knot, from the Netherlands, has been seen as similarly hawkish but less vocal on CBDCs. Hernández de Cos from Spain would likely represent a more accommodative stance.
