NVIDIA is among a broad coalition of AI companies, hardware makers, cloud providers, open-source organizations and venture firms backing a letter that calls open-weight AI models a strategic necessity for US competitiveness.

The document, published by NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang in his first-ever post on X, argues that the future of AI depends on maintaining both frontier closed models and frontier open models, saying open systems can accelerate innovation, improve cybersecurity and strengthen national technological sovereignty rather than undermine it.

According to the letter, open-weight models make advanced AI affordable for organizations that cannot build frontier systems themselves, enabling deployment across industries ranging from manufacturing and healthcare to agriculture, education and small businesses.

The authors say open ecosystems create stronger market competition, reduce costs and distribute the benefits of AI more broadly instead of concentrating them in a handful of companies. While recognizing concerns that open models can be modified or misused, they argue transparency ultimately improves security by allowing researchers and developers to inspect, evaluate and strengthen models collectively.

The letter recommends policies that expand compute access, fund shared datasets and evaluation tools, preserve openness by avoiding restrictive regulation, and safeguard lawful AI development practices such as distillation while addressing intellectual property violations through targeted enforcement.
