Nvidia commits $5 billion to former OpenAI researcher Ilya Sutskever’s AI startup

The long term partnership will give the secretive AI startup access to Nvidia’s Vera Rubin systems and expand its computing capacity tenfold.

Nvidia has agreed to invest about $5 billion in Safe Superintelligence, the secretive artificial intelligence startup led by OpenAI co founder Ilya Sutskever.

The investment forms part of a long term strategic partnership that will give SSI access to Nvidia’s Vera Rubin computing systems. The companies said the infrastructure will increase the startup’s available computing capacity tenfold over the next 12 months.

Nvidia and SSI described the investment only as substantial and did not publicly disclose its value. People briefed on the agreement placed the equity investment at approximately $5 billion, with Bloomberg first reporting the figure.

Sutskever said SSI had developed research worthy of being scaled and that access to a large Nvidia computing system would allow the company to advance that work. SSI has not released a product or published details of its research since its launch in 2024.

The startup was valued at $32 billion during a previous $2 billion funding round. Despite employing only a few dozen people, SSI has become one of Silicon Valley’s most closely watched AI companies because of Sutskever’s role in developing the technology behind ChatGPT.

The deal expands Nvidia’s network of investments in AI developers that are also major customers for its computing hardware. Nvidia has previously backed companies including OpenAI and Thinking Machines Lab, while rival AMD recently committed up to $5 billion to Anthropic.
