OpenAI is giving some of its paying ChatGPT customers a monthly allowance to spend on its developer platform. Eligible ChatGPT Pro and Business subscribers can now claim API credits worth up to $500 per month.
The benefit rolled out in late October 2026 through updates to OpenAI’s Help Center and the @OpenAIDevs account on X. The stated goal is to encourage subscribers to build apps and agents on the OpenAI API platform.
How the credits break down
For individual Pro users, each Pro tier gets a monthly credit equal to its price.
The $100 Pro plan comes with $100 in monthly API credits. The $200 plan gets $200. The $500 plan gets $500.
Business accounts work differently. Instead of a fixed number, credits are pooled at the workspace level based on how many paid seats the organization holds.
Two seat types count toward the pool: Standard seats at $20 per seat and Premium seats at $100 per seat. However many seats a company stacks up, the total is capped at $500 per workspace for each billing period.
The fine print
Not everyone with a ChatGPT login qualifies. Free trials are excluded, as are Enterprise, Edu, and legacy Codex seats.

Subscribers have to link an eligible subscription to an API organization, and that subscription must have been active for at least 7 days.
Credits do not roll over, and they vanish at the end of each billing cycle.
Background: a pricier Pro and a push toward builders
The credits arrive roughly a month after OpenAI expanded its top tier. The company launched the $500 Pro 500 plan on September 29, 2026, during its DevDay event.
DevDay is OpenAI’s annual showcase for developers. The company has been courting people who want to build products on its models, not just chat with them.
The new benefit effectively connects two businesses that have often felt separate: the consumer-facing ChatGPT subscription and the pay-as-you-go API that developers use to wire OpenAI’s models into their own software.
What this means for subscribers, developers, and rivals
For individual power users, anyone who was already paying for both a Pro subscription and separate API usage may see a meaningful portion of that API bill covered, depending on how much they consume.
For businesses, the $500 workspace cap means a mid-sized team will not get anything close to per-seat parity, so the benefit reads more like a sweetener for small teams than a line-item replacement for larger API budgets.
