OpenAI launches dedicated ChatGPT version for teens with stricter safeguards
The firm is adding features designed to encourage healthy usage and independent thinking, including more frequent break reminders, customizable "quiet hours" and an enhanced Study Mode.
OpenAI is introducing a separate ChatGPT experience for teenagers aged 13 to 17 with stronger protections and features that promote healthier AI use.
The new version, rolling out globally from Aug. 18, will apply tighter controls to image generation and content involving self-harm, violence, eating disorders and sexual material, as the company faces increasing scrutiny and lawsuits over the potential effects of ChatGPT on young users.
The updated experience will include more frequent break reminders and customizable quiet hours, which allow users or parents to block access to ChatGPT at specific times.
OpenAI will determine when to provide the teen version using a user’s stated age combined with other signals from account activity. Existing parental controls can already send safety notifications in high-risk situations such as discussions of suicide or self-harm, while the new system expands those alerts to eating disorders and violence.

The company is also adding an upgraded Study Mode that guides teens through problems step by step rather than simply providing answers, aiming to support learning and critical thinking.
