OpenAI set to unveil Dots, its competitor to Meta’s Muse, at Dev Day

OpenAI is rolling out its answer to Meta’s runaway AI agent hit. The product is called Dots, and it’s designed to simulate human interaction while running autonomously on a dedicated virtual computer, with a heavy emphasis on emotional experience.

The announcement is set for Dev Day on September 29, 2026, roughly three weeks after Meta’s Muse landed on app stores and proceeded to embarrass ChatGPT in download rankings.

Meta drew first blood

Meta launched Muse on September 8, and the numbers were immediate. The app pulled in approximately 730,000 downloads in its first five days.

Shortly after, that figure surpassed 2.5 million, vaulting Muse past ChatGPT atop the US iOS free app charts.

Muse runs on Meta’s proprietary Muse Spark model family and is built to handle complex, multi-step tasks inside a secure virtual environment. It integrates across devices and applications, functioning less like a chatbot and more like a digital employee who never clocks out.

What Dots actually does

Leaked internal references for the project included names like “o,” Orbit, and Aeon before OpenAI landed on Dots.

Dots will operate on independent virtual machines, meaning each instance of the agent runs in its own sandboxed computing environment. That architecture allows Dots to handle tasks across multiple apps and services simultaneously without stepping on anything else running on your actual device.

The feature set leans into personalization. Users will be able to create customizable 3D avatars for their Dots agent, and the system is designed to manage messaging, calls, and emails autonomously. Secure password storage is baked in, suggesting OpenAI wants Dots to log into services on a user’s behalf.

The always-on nature of the agent is the other headline feature. Unlike ChatGPT, which waits for you to open it and type something, Dots is designed to be proactive, operating in the background and surfacing relevant actions or information without being prompted.

Meta has a structural advantage through its existing ecosystem. With billions of users across Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Messenger, Muse has natural distribution channels that OpenAI cannot match. The 2.5 million downloads in the opening stretch reflect that built-in audience.

The virtual machine architecture could be a differentiator. Running each agent instance on its own dedicated compute environment offers stronger isolation guarantees than running everything on-device or in a shared cloud environment.
