Schalke 04 extends Edin Dzeko’s contract as sports sponsorship market highlights crypto’s absence from traditional football deals
The 40-year-old striker's conventional contract extension underscores a growing gap between football's sponsorship economy and crypto's fading presence in European sports.
Edin Dzeko, the 40-year-old Bosnian striker, has agreed to a one-year contract extension with Schalke 04, keeping him at the German club until June 2027. The deal is reportedly worth between €900,000 and €1.5 million annually including bonuses.
The deal itself
Dzeko originally joined Schalke on a short-term contract in January 2026, arriving as a free agent after departing AS Roma. He scored six goals in 11 appearances, helping propel the club back to Germany’s top flight.
Negotiations over an extension reportedly began around March 2026 and continued through June, with the club viewing Dzeko as a critical piece for their Bundesliga return campaign. Reports indicate Dzeko delayed his final decision until after fulfilling international commitments with Bosnia-Herzegovina.
Crypto’s vanishing act in football sponsorships
Schalke 04 has previously dabbled in NFT projects and digital partnerships during the industry’s peak hype cycle. No crypto-native platform has commented on or been associated with Dzeko’s contract extension. The deal is entirely conventional in its structure and financing.
Across European football, crypto sponsorships have been quietly unwinding since the 2022 market crash. FTX’s collapse took down its deal with the Mercedes F1 team. Crypto.com’s high-profile partnerships have been scaled back. Fan token platforms have seen trading volumes crater from their peaks.
There is also a regulatory dimension. The EU’s Markets in Crypto-Assets regulation has made it harder for exchanges and token projects to splash their logos across football kits without meeting compliance requirements.
