SoftBank eyes Gravis Robotics acquisition to expand AI ambitions: Report

The Japanese conglomerate is reportedly in preliminary talks to buy the ETH Zurich spinout, adding AI-driven construction robotics to a portfolio that already includes a $5.4 billion bet on ABB's robotics division.

SoftBank Group is exploring an investment in Zurich-based Gravis Robotics that could eventually value the autonomous robotics startup at more than $500 million, according to Bloomberg.

The Japanese technology investor is considering building a large ownership position through Roze, a new AI and robotics company it is creating, with the investment potentially taking place through a series of share purchases and capital injections.

Neither the size nor the structure of a potential transaction has been finalized, the report says.

Founded in 2022, Gravis Robotics develops autonomous and assisted-control systems for heavy construction equipment. Its technology transforms conventional excavators into AI-assisted machines capable of performing tasks such as trenching and grading, with the goal of boosting productivity, improving worker safety and helping offset labor shortages.

The Swiss startup previously raised $23 million in a funding round co-led by IQ Capital and Zacua Ventures.

The discussions reflect SoftBank’s increasing focus on AI-driven robotics under founder Masayoshi Son. Recent moves have included the $5.4 billion acquisition of ABB’s industrial robotics business and talks to expand its investment in Agile Robots. Son has invested in robotics for years, launching Pepper in 2014 and previously owning Boston Dynamics before selling control to Hyundai.
