Synopsys reportedly eyes Chinese AI labs to speed up chip design

A post on X says the chip-design software maker plans to work with Chinese AI labs, but the company has confirmed no such deals

Synopsys, the electronic design automation company, reportedly plans to collaborate with Chinese AI labs to accelerate chip design.

The claim surfaced in a post on X. Synopsys has made no public announcement of any such partnership, and there are no verified reports linking the company to new deals with Chinese AI labs.

What Synopsys has actually announced

On September 30, 2026, Synopsys and OpenAI announced a multi-year strategic partnership. The goal is a new AI model called GPT-Synopsys.

The model pairs OpenAI’s technology with Synopsys’s electronic design automation tools, known in the industry as EDA.

GPT-Synopsys is designed to let AI agents handle parts of that process on their own. The target tasks include PPA optimization, timing, and verification.

The deal covers joint research and development, licensing, and revenue sharing arrangements, and early engagements for the GPT-Synopsys technology have already started.

The AI tools already in the field

The OpenAI tie-up builds on work Synopsys was already doing. The company has been folding AI into its EDA products through two platforms, Autopilot and AgentEngineer.

Synopsys reports more than 50 collaboration projects using those platforms. According to Synopsys, clients have seen up to 50x faster verification closure. The company also reports a 30% enhancement in project productivity.

The China backdrop

Synopsys is no stranger to China. In late 2026, the company opened an expanded office and R&D center in Shanghai to better support local partners and customers.

The company’s publicly visible expansion efforts have centered on deepening ties with established semiconductor players, including TSMC, Samsung, Nvidia, and Intel.

A bigger office is not the same as a partnership with Chinese AI labs. The Shanghai investment does not, on its own, confirm the AI lab collaborations described in the X post.

What this means

For investors, the confirmed story is the OpenAI partnership, not the China report. GPT-Synopsys gives the company a clear narrative: AI agents that automate parts of chip design, with early engagements already underway under a joint R&D and revenue-sharing structure.

The China claim remains a plan attributed to the company in a social media post, without confirmation from Synopsys itself.
