xAI has expanded Grok into Microsoft Excel, launching a free Microsoft 365 add-in that allows users to interact with spreadsheets using conversational prompts, according to a Monday announcement.

The feature lets users ask questions about data, generate Excel formulas and perform scenario analysis directly within existing workbooks.

Founded by Elon Musk in 2023, xAI is an AI company focused on building large language models, including the Grok chatbot, as a rival to OpenAI and other leading AI developers.

Grok can examine spreadsheet data, identify notable patterns, cite the cells used in its analysis and create charts alongside datasets. It also converts plain-language instructions into Excel formulas, helping users automate calculations, forecasts and other spreadsheet workflows.

Available through the Microsoft Marketplace, the add-in can access additional context through connectors to services including SharePoint, Google Drive and email. The Grok productivity suite is also available for Microsoft Word and PowerPoint.
