Real Madrid is about to rewrite its own transfer record book, and the author is a 19-year-old from Abidjan who was playing club football in Spain’s second tier just over a year ago.

Yan Diomande is traveling to Madrid to complete a transfer from RB Leipzig, with the two clubs having agreed on an initial fee of €125 million and potential add-ons that push the total to €140 million. That figure surpasses what Madrid paid for Jude Bellingham, making Diomande the single most expensive acquisition in the club’s history.

From CD Leganés to the Bernabéu in 13 months

The timeline here is worth pausing on. In July 2025, Leipzig signed Diomande from CD Leganés for roughly €20 million. Thirteen months later, he is the subject of a nine-figure deal.

Diomande joined Leganés after coming through DME Academy in the United States. Born on November 14, 2006, in Abidjan, Ivory Coast, Diomande holds French citizenship and has already earned 13 caps for the Ivory Coast senior national team.

The right winger attracted serious attention from PSG and Liverpool before Madrid moved decisively.

A deal that almost had complications

Agency disputes and valuation disagreements emerged during negotiations. Leipzig’s managing director confirmed publicly that those issues would not block the move.

Diomande has now been authorized to travel to Madrid, where he is expected to undergo a medical examination before signing his contract. An official announcement is anticipated shortly after those formalities are completed.

CD Leganés is entitled to a sell-on percentage from this transfer. The club that sold Diomande for approximately €20 million will receive a slice of a deal that could reach €140 million.

For Leipzig, the economics are almost absurdly favorable.
