Yaya Toure appointed new manager of Slovan Bratislava in first senior coaching role
The former Manchester City midfielder signed a two-year deal with the Slovak champions as they prepare for Champions League qualifiers
Yaya Toure, one of the most decorated midfielders of his generation, has been appointed head coach of SK Slovan Bratislava. It’s his first senior managerial position.
The 43-year-old signed a two-year contract with the Slovak club, which just clinched the Slovak First League title for the 2025/26 season.
From midfield maestro to the dugout
Toure’s playing career needs little introduction. The Ivorian was a central figure in Manchester City’s transformation from mid-table also-rans into Premier League champions, winning three league titles during his time at the Etihad Stadium. He also collected trophies at Barcelona, including a Champions League medal.
His transition into coaching has been more measured. Toure served as an assistant manager to Georgios Donis in Saudi Arabia, quietly building his credentials and earning his UEFA Pro Licence, the highest coaching qualification available in European football.
What Slovan Bratislava gets
Fresh off their league title, they’ll enter the Champions League qualifiers for the 2026/27 season.
The crypto connection, such as it is
For crypto-focused readers, there’s a tangential thread worth noting. Slovan Bratislava has a commercial partnership with Millionero, a crypto exchange. The partnership predates Toure’s appointment and there’s no indication that his hiring is connected to any digital asset initiative.
