Missing figures stay unavailable. Forward P/E requires a dated source. Annual revenue, revenue growth, net income and margin come from each company's own 10-K, in US dollars, and each row shows that fiscal year. Revenue growth compares the fiscal year with the prior year stated in the same 10-K. Net income is the full year amount attributable to the company, or available to common stockholders where the filing states only that, or consolidated net income. Each row names its basis. Trailing P/E reads "Not meaningful" when the dated trailing diluted EPS is a loss or zero. An operating margin appears only when the filing states both the operating income and the revenue for the same year.
Sources: SEC filings, Gloria daily closes and CoinGecko. Oldest record refresh: Oct 27, 2026, 10:51 PM EDT. Refresh is not a price or filing date. Each row shows its price date and its annual fiscal period. Peers use industry code and company size, or editorial selection. Market cap multiplies that row price by the company share total the latest SEC filing states for every share class together. Trailing P/E divides it by trailing diluted earnings from SEC filings. Rolled earnings per share are approximate because share counts can change between periods. Both appear only when the SEC data carries its date, so they are estimates at one price date, not synchronized filing valuations. Not investment advice.

Alphabet is learning what every hardware company already knows: building products before you get paid for them is expensive.
An Alphabet executive said a higher inventory of Tensor Processing Unit (TPU) systems built for sale reduced the company’s operating cash flow. That inventory build has helped push Google’s parent into negative free cash flow, territory it hadn’t visited since going public.
The numbers behind the squeeze
In its Q2 2026 earnings report, Alphabet posted its first negative free cash flow since its 2004 IPO. Operating cash flow came in at $39.1 billion. Capital expenditures hit a record $44.9 billion.
The result was free cash flow of negative $5.9 billion.
Inventory is a big part of the story. It climbed from $2.4 billion at the end of 2025 to $9.991 billion by June 30, 2026. That’s an increase of $7.55 billion in the first half of the year alone.
Most of that buildup is tied to TPUs, Google’s custom AI chips, produced for external customers. Every chip sitting in a warehouse is cash that has gone out the door and hasn’t come back yet.
CFO Anat Ashkenazi flagged the rising inventory on the earnings call. She said Alphabet recognized revenue from TPU sales in Q2, but expects most of the related revenue to be realized in 2027.
The pressure didn’t let up in the following quarter. Alphabet reported free cash flow of negative $9.07 billion for Q3 2026, with capital expenditures climbing to $51.36 billion.

Cloud is booming, which is sort of the point
Google Cloud revenue surged 103% year-over-year in Q3 2026, reaching $30.71 billion.
TPU systems played a central role in that growth.
Alphabet also raised its 2026 capex guidance to between $195 billion and $205 billion. The previous range was $180 billion to $190 billion.
Why the business model shift matters
The core change here is how Alphabet monetizes its chips. Historically, Google rented TPU capacity through its cloud. Customers paid for compute time, and Google kept the hardware in its own data centers.
Now Alphabet is selling complete TPU systems directly. That model requires Alphabet to carry far more inventory. Cash gets tied up in chips and systems until they ship and the revenue is booked.
So the negative free cash flow is partly a timing issue. Alphabet has paid to build hardware for which, by its own CFO’s account, most of the revenue isn’t expected until 2027.
What this means for investors and the AI race
For Alphabet shareholders, the picture cuts two ways. On one side, a cloud business growing 103% suggests real demand for Google’s AI hardware. On the other side, the company is funding that growth with cash it isn’t generating fast enough to cover. Two straight quarters of negative free cash flow, at negative $5.9 billion and then negative $9.07 billion, mark a sharp break from Alphabet’s history.
The key variable is conversion. If those TPU systems deliver and the revenue arrives as Ashkenazi expects, the inventory pile should eventually turn back into cash.
With guidance now at $195 billion to $205 billion for 2026, spending is rising faster than operating cash flow.
By selling full TPU systems, Alphabet is stepping more directly into the AI hardware market rather than keeping its chips as an in-house advantage for Google Cloud. That broadens its addressable market, but it also brings the working-capital headaches that come with selling physical products.
What to watch next: Alphabet’s inventory line in coming quarters, any update on TPU delivery timing, and whether 2027 revenue recognition lines up with management’s expectations.
