Anthropic strikes $10 billion compute deal with Nvidia backed Volta and Bitdeer
The six year agreement would give the Claude developer access to 133 megawatts of capacity at a Bitdeer operated data center in Norway.
Anthropic has reportedly agreed to spend $10 billion on computing capacity supplied by AI infrastructure startup Volta Infra and Bitcoin mining company Bitdeer Technologies.
The six year contract gives the Claude developer access to a data center in Norway operated by Bitdeer, according to Bloomberg, which cited people familiar with the matter.
The facility will provide 133 megawatts of capacity and is expected to use Nvidia’s newest Vera Rubin chips.
Volta announced the agreement Tuesday but did not identify the customer, describing it only as a leading AI developer. Reuters said it could not independently verify that Anthropic was the unnamed company. Anthropic declined to comment, while Volta and Bitdeer have not publicly confirmed the customer’s identity.
Shares of Bitdeer rose nearly 10% in premarket trading following reports of the agreement.
The deal marks Anthropic’s latest attempt to secure the immense computing capacity required to train and operate its Claude models as adoption grows among developers, businesses and consumers.
Anthropic has signed a series of infrastructure and computing agreements with companies including SpaceX, AMD, Microsoft, Nvidia, Alphabet and Amazon. The company raised $65 billion earlier this year to support its expansion and is reportedly considering an initial public offering as soon as this year.
Bitcoin miners pivot toward AI
The agreement also highlights the growing role of Bitcoin mining companies in the AI infrastructure boom.
Bitdeer has been converting parts of its energy and data center portfolio from crypto mining to AI cloud services and colocation. Its June operational update confirmed that it had executed a lease for its Tydal site in Norway, subject to certain conditions.
The company is also evaluating or developing AI conversions at sites in Texas, Tennessee and Washington. Bitdeer reported approximately $76 million in annual recurring AI cloud revenue in June, with its deployed GPUs operating at a 95% utilization rate.
Bitcoin miners have increasingly pursued AI customers because both industries require access to large amounts of electricity, cooling systems and data center infrastructure. AI contracts can also provide miners with longer and more predictable revenue streams than Bitcoin production.
Volta reaches $2.4 billion valuation
Volta was founded in January by former Brookfield Asset Management executives and helps AI companies lease computing capacity and finance costly chip purchases.
The startup announced that it raised $300 million across seed and Series A financing at a $2.4 billion valuation. Investors included Azora, Andreessen Horowitz, Altimeter and Nvidia.
Volta also launched a separate $5 billion infrastructure program with Azora to finance additional AI data centers. The Norway facility represents the first project in a development pipeline covering more than one gigawatt of planned capacity across Europe and North America.
