The design platform beat its own guidance and raised its full-year outlook, but investors fixated on what AI is costing to run

Figma just posted the kind of quarter most software companies would frame and hang in the lobby. Revenue hit $391 million for the third quarter of 2026, up 43% year over year.

The market’s response was less celebratory. Shares slid in after-hours trading as investors turned their attention from the revenue line to the expense side, specifically the cost of running AI.

The numbers behind the beat

Figma, Inc. (NYSE: FIG) reported revenue of $391.4 million for the quarter ending September 30, 2026. That figure landed $16.4 million above the company’s own prior guidance.

The company credits faster adoption of its AI features for the lift.

Net dollar retention came in at 131%. That marks the fifth straight quarter the metric has stayed above 130%.

The customer base is also scaling up the value ladder. Paid customers generating more than $10,000 in annual recurring revenue reached 16,566, an increase of 3,650 from the prior year.

Profitability showed up too. Non-GAAP operating income was $47 million, which works out to a 12% margin for the quarter. The balance sheet held $1.7 billion in cash, equivalents, and marketable securities.

Guidance goes up, growth cools down

Figma raised its full-year 2026 revenue guidance to a range of $1.497 billion to $1.499 billion.

The fourth-quarter outlook calls for revenue of $402 million to $404 million. At the midpoint, that implies year-over-year growth of about 33%.

Gross margins were reported at 80% on a GAAP basis and 82% on a non-GAAP basis. The concern among investors is what happens next, as elevated AI inference costs could put pressure on those margins going forward.

The AI bet, and its bill

Figma has leaned hard into AI tools, including the Figma Agent. Management says these features have meaningfully boosted user engagement and productivity. Notably, 65% of large paid customers are utilizing the Figma Agent weekly, alongside a doubled share of projects powered by Figma’s advanced proprietary design model. The company also launched Code Layers in open beta in mid-October 2026.

Figma’s broader thesis gives the AI push a strategic logic beyond keeping pace. If AI tools make writing code cheaper and faster, the bottleneck moves upstream. In that world, design becomes the control room rather than a preliminary step.

What this means for Figma and its investors

The quarter presents investors with a classic tradeoff. On one side sit 43% growth, a guidance beat, a raised outlook, retention above 130% for five consecutive quarters, and a growing base of large customers. On the other sit decelerating growth into the fourth quarter and the open question of how much AI will eat into gross margins.

The $1.7 billion cash position gives Figma room to keep investing through this transition without immediate financial strain.
