About GUSD
Gemini Dollar is a stablecoin pegged 1:1 to the U.S. dollar. It was created by Gemini Trust Company, LLC, the cryptocurrency exchange founded by Tyler Winklevoss and Cameron Winklevoss. Gemini began issuing GUSD on September 9, 2018. GUSD is an ERC-20 token on the Ethereum blockchain, with its supply and transfers recorded on-chain. The token is used for stable value transfers, payments, and interactions with decentralized finance applications, not for staking or governance. Its purpose is to let users move value on-chain without the price volatility of most cryptocurrencies. GUSD has no fixed maximum supply. It operates on a mint-and-redeem model, with circulating supply backed by U.S. dollar reserves held by Gemini and intended to track those reserves at all times.
