About Helium
Helium is a decentralized wireless network that provides connectivity for IoT devices and mobile phones through user-operated nodes called Hotspots. Amir Haleem, Shawn Fanning, and Sean Carey founded the project in 2013. The network launched in July 2019, with the first HNT emitted on July 29, 2019. Helium originally ran on its own layer-1 blockchain before migrating to the Solana blockchain in April 2023, after which consensus is provided by Solana's proof-of-stake mechanism. The native token, Helium Network Token (HNT), is used for governance and is burned to create Data Credits that pay for data transfer and network usage. Hotspot operators earn HNT rewards for providing verifiable LoRaWAN IoT and mobile network coverage. HNT has a hard-capped maximum supply of 223 million tokens and follows a scheduled halving emissions model, with circulating supply reported at roughly 186 to 188 million tokens as of 2025. Helium is one of the longer-running efforts to build decentralized physical wireless infrastructure through token-incentivized community participation.
