Rangers coach Danny Rohl targeted by Red Bull Salzburg for exit
The German coach has been the subject of growing interest from European clubs since taking charge at Ibrox
Danny Rohl, the head coach of Rangers FC, is reportedly being pursued by Red Bull Salzburg. The Austrian club is attempting to lure the German tactician away from Ibrox, adding another name to the growing list of clubs circling the Rangers boss.
Rohl was appointed head coach of Rangers on October 20, 2025, signing a deal that runs through June 30, 2028.
A coach in demand across Europe
Speculation throughout May 2026 linked him to several Bundesliga sides, including VfL Wolfsburg, 1. FC Union Berlin, and Bayer Leverkusen.
The Wolfsburg connection appears to have cooled somewhat. Reports from mid-May 2026 indicated Rohl had dropped down the club’s managerial shortlist.
Rangers digging in
Rohl has publicly pushed back against the departure narrative. On May 12, 2026, the coach confirmed he had received assurances from the Rangers board regarding his position for the following season.
He also addressed the contractual side directly, denying the existence of any release clause in his deal with the club.
The Rangers board reaffirmed their confidence in Rohl’s leadership as recently as mid-May 2026.
What to watch
The absence of a release clause gives Rangers genuine leverage in any negotiation. Salzburg, or any other interested party, would need to make a compelling enough financial offer to convince the Ibrox board to part with their coach.
The Bundesliga links may also resurface. Even though Wolfsburg’s interest appears to have faded, Union Berlin and Leverkusen remain potential destinations if those clubs make coaching changes.
