The venture giant's rebrand plan lands as a16z insists its $2.2 billion fifth fund remains fully committed to crypto founders
Andreessen Horowitz plans to rename a16z crypto, its dedicated digital asset investment arm, as a16z frontier as the Silicon Valley venture capital firm considers widening the unit’s focus beyond the sector, The Information reported Thursday.
The firm has notified some limited partners of the proposed change.
Established in June 2018 with an initial $350 million fund, a16z crypto has raised five dedicated funds totaling about $9.8 billion. Its fundraising includes a $2.2 billion fifth fund announced in 2026.
The practice is led by Chris Dixon and has invested in companies spanning multiple parts of the crypto economy, from blockchain infrastructure and trading platforms to decentralized finance and consumer-facing products.
