About Qtum

Qtum is an open-source, hybrid public blockchain that supports decentralized applications by combining Bitcoin's UTXO transaction model with Ethereum-style smart contracts through an Account Abstraction Layer. Patrick Dai, Jordan Earls, and Neil Mahi founded the project in 2016, with backing from the Qtum Chain Foundation. The mainnet launched in March 2017 as a layer-1 smart contract platform. Qtum uses Mutualized Proof-of-Stake (MPoS) consensus, which places a Bitcoin-like UTXO base layer beneath an Ethereum Virtual Machine smart contract layer. The native token, QTUM, is used to pay transaction and smart contract execution fees, to stake and earn validator rewards under MPoS, and to participate in network governance through Qtum's Decentralized Governance Protocol. QTUM has a capped maximum supply of approximately 107,822,406 tokens. Block rewards decline over time and are scheduled to reach zero around 2045. The platform targets decentralized finance, IoT, and other application development while retaining Bitcoin-style UTXO security.
